Secure Our Data - Protecting the Privacy of Pennsylvania Residents and Drivers
When we reviewed Pennsylvania’s current privacy practices, we discovered that Pennsylvania state officials have frequently chosen to sell and share personal information to private companies and hundreds of government agencies without informing drivers. Pennsylvania has failed to protect the privacy of cardholder information, and this failure must be addressed immediately. Individuals should not have to choose between obtaining a driving license and keeping their information private.

Driving is such an essential part of basic mobility that most of us take it for granted. Many of us see no risk in simply getting in our cars and driving to a doctor’s appointment or to pick up groceries for our families. The right to free mobility, however, is not afforded to our undocumented immigrant population. In Pennsylvania, proof of legal residency is required for a driver’s license.

Pennsylvania residents used to be able to apply, take a driver’s exam, and receive a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status. But in 2003, a law went into effect barring undocumented residents from obtaining driver’s licenses, interfering with their ability to provide for themselves and their families.
